This is me and my beautiful Mummy, last year on Mother’s Day.
My Mom doesn’t really drink much – how she could produce me, I don’t know – but she does love sparkling wine.
For example, one Christmas Day, we were all sipping some sparkling as we opened presents and got dinner ready. Gradually, we noticed that our glasses were empty. Even though we hadn’t been drinking from them. Then this angelic, motherly face would say ever so sweetly “Oh, I’m so sorry….was that your glass?”. Yes, my Mom is the notorious sparkling wine thief.
You have been forewarned.
So in honour of Mother’s Day, we decided to go on the Sparkling Wine Tour at Trius.
And once again, it was a beautiful spring day.
I was excited to take a tour specifically focused on sparkling wine. We make some fantastic sparklings here in Ontario, and Trius is known for theirs – the Trius Brut and Trius Brut Rosé. Trius Brut Rosé was the winner of the Best Sparkling Wine of the Year in the 2013 All Canadian Wine Championships. When you take the tour you will see why. And best of all, you will taste why too.
So we met up with our lovely tour guide and set off.
We started on the upper terrace, which has a stunning view of the vineyard property.
Then we went right down into the Chardonnay section of the vineyard. We talked about the grapes, how they are grown and how they are harvested.
You could see the tiniest beginnings of buds on the vines. Very exciting.
But heading down into the gorgeous wine cellar was very exciting too. Look at this beauty.
A gorgeous event space. It was set up for a group that was just about to come in. I was debating about trying to sneak into that group, but was whisked away into the sparkling wine cellar instead.
Which was fascinating. At any given time, there are about 350,000 to 500, 000 bottles of sparkling wine in this cellar.
Just think about that for a minute. I found that fact a bit mind-boggling.
Look at this! There were several sections, all like this. Sparkling wine bottles, row upon row. It really was something to see.
There were two gentlemen working in the cellar, who also answered some of our questions. Without giving away any of their trade secrets, of course.
I think working a sparkling wine cellar might just be my idea of heaven. One of them anyway.
So we discussed the whole process down here – from the tank, to the bottle, and the cellar. Then it was time for my favourite part.
We started with Trius Sparkling Brut, then moved on to the Trius Sparkling Brut Rosé.
I must confess, I am a sucker for pink sparklings or pink champagne. I don’t know what it is. Maybe the pink just makes you feel even more festive?
I also loved the funky, contemporary champagne flutes.
We finished off with The Blushing Canadian – Trius Brut Rosé with a dose of Vidal Icewine. I really am a fan of using Icewine in cocktails.
But that wasn’t all – there was one more sparkling to be had. So we bid farewell to our tour guide, and went upstairs to The Loft.
The Loft is a special tasting gallery at Trius, where you can sample their Showcase wines.
I was specifically up there to try the 2009 Blanc de Noir
Look closely – can you see the bubbles on the rim of the bottle?
It was absolutely beautiful. If I drank this with my Mother, I would have to hold onto my glass with both hands. Maybe the bottle too. But she has been so good to me, perhaps she deserves a bottle of her own.
The Sparkling Wine Tour at Trius is an informative, fun way to spend some time with your Mom on Mother’s Day, or any day really.
Just make sure you hang onto your glass.
